Just recently, Gmail starts its free call service in the North America, for sure this service doesn’t work in China, but there is a good news, you can now send free text-message to mobile phone to following countries…US, Ghana, Israel, Palestinian, Senegal and Zambia.

First step: Login into your Gmail.

Second step: Go to settings – labs – and check these 2 options – click save, then back to your Gmail.

Third step: Now at your Gmail page, you can find this icon at the left bar:

Click at the “phone number”, input your number then “Return”, it pops up something like this way:

Choose from the country list, input the name of the recipient, then here you go:

As Google says, initially, you’re granted a quota of fifty messages, with each message you sent, it decreases by one, but when they reply you (you can get their message from here as well!), your quota will increase by five, for detail please check here.

Enjoy it for now!

Suppose there is a big cornfield, and you are asked to pick up the biggest golden ear of wheat, and the condition is that there is only one to pick, and you can only go ahead without return, what you will do?

Some picks up the first big ear of wheat at their first grasp, that might be too recklessly, as there is nothing to do when they pass by some really big ones. Or, some might get a so so in hand just before they realize that it would be rather too late for nothing.

Ideally, the best solution on this problem could be handled in three steps:

1/3. We will not pick up any ear of wheat, just walk and setup a criteria.
2/3. Do the same thing as in step 1, and if possible make some correction on the criteria.
3/3. Pick up the best one we encounter.

Mathematicians can deal these steps into a more quantitative approach: total departure between big and average wheat ear size, percentage of big wheat ear in the field, synchronization in these two data should make it easy to know what is the perfect size. So far as those big enough wheat ears are perfectly random-scattered in the field, criteria can be setup in the middle point.

Anyway, criteria once made, fetch a big enough wheat ear whenever you meet!

This is very useful in our daily life, for example, when we trying to buy some souvenirs in an overseas travel, people would not buy a lot stuff at the first or second stop.

By the way, sociologists are more seriously on this, they even name it as Wheat Ear Theory, it could be also very helpful in search one’s Mr. or Mrs. Right. For instance, if we take a look of a girl’s married age from 20-30 years old, and if we cut this time into three stages: 21-24, 25-27, 27-30, according to the statistics on 2006, the married age of the girls in Beijing is 26 years old (just in time), in Shanghai is 28 (Oops, a little late maybe!).

As a matter of fact, unmarried mature females with high education levels and high salaries are quite common in Beijing, the more they have missed, the harder they will have to make up a decision.

Panjiayuan Flea Market is located at the south east of the 3rd Ring Road. It is an open air market, opened 7 days a week, but the best time to go is on weekend. The market was famous for antique dealings about 10 years ago, today it is famous for the big collections of handicraft works from the neighbouring provinces, but not entirely in the sense of antiques, you can still get some real stuff, but not very easy.

Take it as a fun place for half day shopping, or maybe just a visit to a museum, but not as a serious real antique shopping place, especially when you were told that the stuff you are staring at is from Song or Tang Dynasty…and if you really want to buy it, they will have a story on it, the only thing you can rely on is your own sharp eyes.

The market sells almost anything you can imagine, from the big vase to menus of old cameras, or personal letters, even old private diary, it could be roughly categoried into: porcelain, jade or gem, furnitures, wooden carving, clock (watch), stamps, coins, painting(mostly Chinese paintings), second hand books, newspaper and magezines, old photos (sometime you can find old family album), collections from the Cultural Revolution (Mao’s red books, notebooks, posters, bags)… all of the above could be: seemingly very old or authentic stuff, replica, or just today’s handicraft work. The price may vary a lot from just 10 to several hundres or thousands yuan.
